This is where all the important belongings like models and pieces of work
for presentation are stored. As we can see, bits and pieces lying about
and is arranged in an untidy manner. This is an example of what the storage
area looks like in other rooms. It seems to be works that need to be hand
completed, as cutting and sticking is left untouched for a long time.
In this area, the drafting boards are not arranged orderly. It is a very
dark and messy area and most of these rooms are very inappropriate for
a working environment. In some rooms, we see about 3 chairs inside the
room compared to 20 drafting boards. This because manual drawing is less
needed, so now it is used as decorations!
Students' final designs are mounted presented in a creative fashion.
In this piece, 99% of the work done are computer aided, from floor plans
to 3D views to background shading. 1% involves sticking it on to a board.
An example of the type of models they produce. Model making is probably
the only type of manual work students does. Their model making skills are
quite good, as we see the models are very detailed and look as if a lot
of effort has gone towards it.
The scanner is plays an important role in Architecture. Using the software
Photoshop, CAD and other drawing aided programs, part of their design work
involves 3D views of their building design. A scanner can place special
graphics in rendering their 3D views and with the help of Photoshop. Saves
a lot of time.
The computer is needed in all Architectural work. The use of computers
not only saves time, but also accurate and cost effective. Therefore manual
drawing has been unfavoured. Comparing with our school, their computing
equipment is quite 'out of date' but the software they use is quite new.
The latest version of Photoshop 5 and AutoCad (Computer Aided Drawing)
shows how serious their computer drawing is. The speed of these computers
Once again, we see these computers are getting old. On the other hand,
next to it is a laser printer. The use of a laser printer is very time
efficient, but also needs replacing.
Background: A nice comfortable environment for working. Plotter: Linked
with a computer and a program, the plotter can produce floor plans and
views as a large scale. This is most important for model making, and for
the final presentation.
The University of South Australia is located at 61-72 North Terrace, Adelaide.
Entrance: This is just one of the levels that lead into the classrooms.
In the City West University, there are over 200 rooms and 2000 people involved
in the Faculty of Architecture and the largest in S.A.
